Superman vs Doomsday – The Death of Superman
“The Death of Superman – Superman vs Doomsday” is a 1992 comic book storyline that occurred mostly in DC Comics’ Superman titles. The completed multi-issue story arc was given the title The Death and Return of Superman.
In the story, Superman engages in battle to stop a killing spree with an immensely powerful and seemingly unstoppable creature of unknown origin named Doomsday across the United States. At the fight’s conclusion, both combatants apparently die from their wounds in the streets of Metropolis in Superman (vol. 2) #75 in 1993.
Superman has always represented the best in all of us, which made it even more shocking when DC announced in 1993 that a new storyline would deal with the death of the man of steel. The title became an immediate best seller, and, like it or not, a milestone in the comic world. This was the moment when comic book fans realized that no one was truly safe. Superman eventually returned, but the power of the story, and the allure of the villain Doomsday, we already entrenched in the lore of Kal-El. It’s one of those comics that everyone tried to save for posterity.
